A body lies right outside King William's door. Time to send for the King's Investigator, Brother Hermitage (funny name for a monk) and his two associates, Wat the Weaver and Cwen, a fierce female and hater of Normans. But, it would seem that another person wants the title of King's Investigator. Soon Hermitage himself is accused of murder and treason and is forced to go into hiding in the Saxon village roof thatch. (Read the book if you don't understand that.)This is another very amusing novel. It would seem that many the characters from past novels have decided to make an appearance in this novel. There are the usual misunderstandings and weird characters to befuddle Brother Hermitage. I found the story a bit off with the character of John. He is a Normal but doesn't act like a typical Norman. Instead of looking for Saxon heads to remove, painfully, he comes into the story and does his best to help the Saxons. Too much of the story is taken up with him explaining court politics and the fight for political survival. It just seems a bit odd. At the ending of this novel, one would get the feeling that this is the final book in the series. I should hope not.
